It is fascinating to follow these radio debates. But I am still concerned that this issue have been aired via this medium (i.e. not accessible to D/deaf people who can't phone in and join the debate and quite possibly inform the masses - instead we got blind dudes who can do this) and via newspapers via smug smartarse columnists (with some exceptions to be made) where you would need a good comprehension of English. I feel the input from the real grass-roots of the Deafies, who would be affected by this, are found wanting. I wonder if this is truly turning out to be a balanced debate since we are only getting opinions from people who can surf and put together a cogent response in English?

I love Richard's quote! Classic!

Victoria Derbyshire
Richard, let me read you this email. Richard, I’d like to read you this email from Brian and you may say it’s naive but I think a number of people would agree with it. “Surely it’s best for society and for the child itself to have the ability to hear? From hearing fire alarms and walking across the road safely, to appreciating the music of Beethoven and Mozart, it’s better to be able to hear.

Richard
Right, ok, Beethoven went deaf and created some fantastic music; to cross the road, you use your eyes and a smoke alarm, you put lights on and they flash. Next question.

Tomato, Paula and Richard are spot on! They know what they talking about!

Many hearing people who have not got a clue why they think deaf people is still disability because they probably have not been brought up, getting involve with deaf community or have been taught by deaf awareness /British Sign Language (BSL) training course.

One simple answer, can you tell me what the Muslim culture like if you have never experience it? You would probably think they are bad people with suicide bomber or whatever, just because of what the media say it all but they are definitely not! They are genuine and generous nice people. Why? I have been with them for many years. I do know what their culture is like and I respect them very much.

The main problem is you are all living inside the box. Think out of the box! That would the same apply to deaf people!

Breath in and experience it with deaf community if you are going to try it, then you will understand more!

You are a star for transcribing this, Claire, what a great programme that has been.

Victoria Derbyshire was just utterly brilliant...she LISTENED to Tomato and Paula, which makes a nice change.

And whoever Richard is, he deserves a big round of waving hands applause :-) Spot on.

This is actually an amazing interview, but the hearies still come off looking like arseholes. Frigging arseholes.

This comment says it all for me:

Ken – Why would I want to… Why would I go and learn sign language and learn to lip-read, just because I can? I’ve got other things to do in life. I’ve got children to bring up, I’ve got work to do, I don’t have time to do these things.
